Introduction
Internet cartography of the town of Trento
This service, which only a few Italian towns can boast, is for some
particular aspects (i.e. free download) an innovation at a national
level and an important instrument of transparency.
Together with the recently announced information service on the in-progress
state of the papers via SMS, it represents one of the first significant
steps taken by the local government towards the implementation of
the strategic plan “Trento – Digital town”.
This service has been realized by the Town Planning office and the
Information System office of the town of Trento in co-operation with
Informatica Trentina S.p.a., which provided its technological know-how
to surf the web presentation of the cartographic data.
It is addressed mostly to enterprises and professionals that need
basic and thematic cartographic information for their daily work.
Think, for example, of the frequent need of knowing the restrictions
related to the general town planning scheme and the hydro-geologic
ones.
Instead of asking for information directly to the local authority,
you can receive them easily and free in your office. This service
is complementary to the front desk service for enterprises and citizens
because it aims to make the communication process between citizens
and local authorities more rapid and more efficient, too.
It is also fundamental for internal use among town administration
offices because it allows every employee with a PC to have direct
access to cartographic information; this is particularly important
for producing administration documents and it is a frequent procedure,
too. In the past, this was possible only through the installation
of a specific software. Now it is available to all employees and at
much lower costs.
This service can be also useful for those subjects that operate in
the territory, like the emergency service (Trentino Emergenza –
118), police and fire departments, postal service, when, for example,
they need to localize a building at a certain house number and street
rapidly.
Finally, this service is dedicated to the single citizen and also
to occasional visitors because it allows to localize areas and streets
in the town easily. It for this reason that an English version is
also available. Although the actual configuration of the functionalities
for professional purposes has been preferred, we see possible future
extensions of the information for tourists in order to turn the cartographic
site into a useful instrument for those who come to Trento to find
out information about its historical, artistic and cultural heritage.
The issues you can consult on the Internet are the mostly used ones by the local administration:
- cartographic aerophotogrammetric data banks of the Town of Trento, updated to the year 2000 with the contribution of Consorzio Comuni B.I.M. dell’Adige (i.e. consortium of the local authorities of the Province of Trento) and Trentino Servizi S.p.A.
- thematic
maps (toponomy, general town planning scheme, concise geological
map).
The specific planning based on territorial continuum allows to surf efficiently and rapidly throughout our territory both using graphic instruments (zoom and progressive movements) and starting from alphanumeric data: name of a street or a place, house number, name of the cadastral commune and plot of land.
