Districts

The municipal territory is divided into 12 Districts, which act as initial and direct contact point between the Municipality and the citizens, promote and support residents’ involvement in the active management of the local community, and work as functional peripheral offices for administrative services.

The Districts can intervene in the management of basic services related to culture and leisure, sports, use of public premises, social policies, twinning, functioning and informative and representative acts.

Cultural, leisure and sports activities are scheduled and implemented both directly and through funding.

Within the scope of their direct activity, initiatives promoting socialising and twinning in those 7 districts which have instigated such relations are enacted.

Furthermore, the Districts act as peripheral offices for the Registry Office and, limited to the powers assigned thereto, they issue the relevant IT-based certifications.

Each District has its own elected Council and president. The District Council has the power to instigate and has an advisory function; it can submit proposals, documents, questions and interpellations and give opinions (mainly compulsory) to the Municipal Administration. District Council meetings are public.

Each district has a “Civic Centre” which acts as official  seat of the Districts, point of reference and meeting for residents.
